Parkinson's disease is a chronic progressive
neurological disorder that can be effectively controlled
for many years through medication, rehabilitative
therapies and in some cases surgery. The primary
symptoms are tremor at rest, slowness of movement,
rigidity and problems with balance. Symptoms appear
after approximately 80% of the brain's
dopamine-producing cells are lost for unknown reasons.
Other symptoms may include problems with handwriting,
lack of facial expression, muffled speech, and
depression. No one patient develops all of these
symptoms and the rate of progression of the disease
varies from one person to another. The cause of
Parkinson's is not known but much research is being
done.
At Keweenaw Home Nursing and Hospice we have a
Parkinson's Support Group that meets on the second
Monday of the month at 1pm at our office. The purpose is
to provide education, support and fellowship to both the
person with Parkinson's and their care partner. Another
resource for a wealth of free information is the
National Parkinson Foundation at
www.parkinson.org. |
