| Aspirus Keweenaw Home
Health & Hospice (AKHH&H), formerly known Keweenaw Home
Nursing & Hospice, is a certified home care
and hospice agency providing services in Houghton and
Keweenaw counties. The agency was founded in 1989 by two
Copper Country residents, Wanda Kolb and
Diane Tiberg,
registered nurses with an entrepreneurial spirit, a
dedication to excellence, and a strong desire to serve
the people of the Keweenaw. They set out to make a
difference in the community in which they were raised.
The need for high quality, skilled in-home services was
apparent, because by early 1990 the company quickly grew
from three employees working out of Diane's
home to ten employees working in a small office building
in Laurium. Continued growth of the agency necessitated
yet more space, and in 1996, KHNH moved to its current
location at 311 Sixth Street in Historic Downtown
Calumet.
In 1993,
the agency responded to another need in the community... hospice. The nearest Medicare certified hospice was
100 miles away. The decision was made to begin a hospice
program, and Ray Weglarz, RN, was asked to head the
project. We admitted our first patient to hospice in
October of 1993. In 1994, the agency chose to be
accredited by the Community Health Accreditation Program
(CHAP). CHAP ensures that agencies adhere to the very
highest standards of excellence in the hospice and home
care industry.
On June 1, 2009, Aspirus VNA purchased Keweenaw Home
Nursing & Hospice & Keweenaw Home Services.
A lot has
happened with our home health agency over the
past 20 years. We have kept the needs of the people of
this community, as well as the needs of our employees,
at the heart of our service. The number of patients and
visits has grown, as has the number of employees. With
nearly 60 employees and 40 volunteers we continue to
provide the highest quality service possible.
The
employees of AKHH&H are dedicated to serving their friends
and neighbors in the Keweenaw and their excellence in
home care is much of the reason the agency celebrates
its success. Our compassionate and knowledgeable staff
works closely with patients and families to provide the
exceptional care you have come to trust. Our staff of
skilled nurses, certified home care aides, medical social
workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists,
and our interdisciplinary hospice team works with you to
design a personal plan of care to promote your health,
independence, and ability to stay at home. We also
provide services that respond to the needs of the
community such as Parkinson's Support Group, Adult
Caregivers Group, Blood Pressure Monitoring Clinics,
Grief and Bereavement Support.
Growth,
change, challenge, and innovation have led to the
expansion and success of AKHH&H. We continue to set the
standard for exceptional home care and hospice in the
Keweenaw.
In 2009, we celebrated our 20 years in
the "Heart of the Keweenaw."
